The 1905 Tavern Scranton

The 1905 Tavern Scranton is a newly renovated spot in the former Daddy’s Bar. This South Side pub and eatery features an expansive menu of creative items packed with flavor. They also feature live entertainment often. I stopped by after a number of my readers recommended I try the pizza and wings.

With a hungry family at home I placed an order of “The Trainwreck” pizza, a round pizza, a gluten free pizza, mild chicken wings, and cheesesteak fries. Several folks recommended the sweet sauce square as well, but we could only eat so much!

What is The Trainwreck?

The “Trainwreck” was the headliner of this stop as it had a ton going on! It included fresh dough, tunnel cheese, whiz, seasoned philly steak, cup n char pepperoni, fresh cut fries, and their house trainwreck sauce. I’ll describe the trainwreck sauce as like a combination of vodka and buffalo sauce (I’m told it’s not buffalo sauce) but that doesn’t quite do it justice, you gotta try for yourself.

French fries on pizza are usually something I’m not a fan of but these hand cut spuds added some nice texture and they remained fairly crispy and not mushy at all. The steak was tender and nicely seasoned, and the cup n char pepperoni just makes everything better! The cheese blend and the wiz brought everything together and I wouldn’t even be able to render a guess as to what the “Tunnel cheese” is, but it is very good. The crust was wonderfully cooked on the bottom with some blistering and browning as you can see in the video below. It was a bready (not too thick, not too thin) and hearty crust with a nice bake on it.

Video Review of 1905 Tavern Pizza

The round pizza also featured a beautiful bake on it – deep golden brown crust with those blisters around the edge. It was a thinner yet sturdy crust with no flop. The sauce was smooth with no onions to speak of, nicely balanced and good proportions. The cheese blend was also very tasty and brought the whole pizza together. Overall, this was a very good pizza that falls in the “party pleaser” category that has something for everyone. I very much enjoyed it.

The gluten free pizza featured a thin crust that was crispy around the edges and tender in the middle. It featured a vibrant red sauce and another tasty and enjoyable cheese blend. The cheese blends seem to be something of a signature of the 1905 tavern and are on point. Another thing I liked about this pizza and really all 3 of them were the proportions of the ingredients. They were all very neatly and carefully put together hitting the component ratios properly. The quality of the ingredients in everything we tried were high and the whole family enjoyed the food.

Overall, The 1905 Tavern lived up to the hype of the people who recommended it. It’s has a cool vibe, very good food, and an inventive menu that many are sure to like. Certainly a place to check out in the electric city!
