I walked in, ordered, paid the bill, and reviewed the pizza like every other customer. No heads-up. No comps.
Every so often I stop at a place and wonder why nobody is talking about it. A’s Eatery on Sanderson Avenue in Scranton is one of those places. I don’t hear many people mention it, and after my visit I honestly can’t figure out why.
A Bigger Place Than I Expected, With an Italian Diner Feel
A’s sits on a nice stretch of Sanderson Avenue, with plenty of parking in the back of the building and street parking out front. I expected something smaller. Inside there is a lot of seating, plus a sit-down counter for eating. I don’t believe there is an alcohol bar, but it’s a comfortable sit-down spot for lunch or dinner, and they’re open for both. The whole place has a bit of an Italian diner vibe to it.
The Plain NY-Style Cheese: A Punchy, Herb-Forward Sauce Running the Show

I ordered a plain round New York-style cheese pizza.
The sauce was the star. It was punchy, a little bit spicy, a little bit tangy, and very herb-forward, with plenty of Italian seasoning. It was the leading component of this pizza from the first bite.
The crust was crisp, a little bit dense, and a little bit chewy, with a very satisfying chew. The one thing I would have liked more is a better shoreline, which is what we call it when the sauce and cheese reach farther out toward the edge of the crust.
The cheese leaned a little salty, with almost buttery notes, and that saltiness balanced nicely against the bold sauce.
Overall this was a very good, solid pizza with really great balance. I’d call it a party pleaser. Bring a tray of it home or to a party, set it on the table, and I think everybody there would at least enjoy it.
The Hot Wing Stromboli: More Buffalo Chicken Hoagie Than Stromboli

I also tried a personal hot wing stromboli, and I very much enjoyed it. It was packed with diced breaded chicken fingers and a solid amount of cheese, and there was more chicken than cheese, which I loved. It ate more like a Buffalo chicken hoagie than a stromboli.
The sauce was the standout. It was a Buffalo sauce on the sweet side with a little bit of bite, and the slightly thick texture made me think there was some honey in it. They also give you a side of mild sauce for dipping, which is great because you can dunk everything without making a total mess, plus a side of blue cheese. You really get your money’s worth at A’s.
Pizzaiolo’s Notes 🍕
- 🍅 That sauce has real personality. Punchy, a little bit spicy, and herb-forward is a nice change from the sweeter sauces we see all over NEPA.
- 🧀 A little bit of salt in the cheese is exactly what a bold sauce like this needs to stay balanced.
- 🍕 Push the sauce and cheese out for a better shoreline, and more bites get that great sauce.
- 🐔 Packing the stromboli with more chicken than cheese, and giving you a side of sauce for dipping, is a smart way to keep it from getting soggy or messy.
What I’d Order Next Time
- The tacos
- The Sweet Heat Margherita pizza
- One of their sandwiches
Why I’m Calling A’s Eatery a Scranton Hidden Gem
The portions are good, the prices are solid, the people are really nice, and they’re not taking shortcuts. They’re making everything with love. I’m not sure why more people aren’t talking about this place, and that’s exactly why I’m designating it a Scranton hidden gem. It’s a good local spot to support, with good people, good pizza, and food that looks out of this world.
