Pizza Shackamaxon Philadelphia (Fishtown) is consistently mentioned as having one of the best slices of pizza in the City of Brotherly Love. Their inclusive company slogan reads: “Pizza by the people, of the people, for the people. All are welcome.” It has a very hip vibe and the pizzeria gets a lot of love from foodies on social media!
Adding to the allure of Pizza Shackamaxon is that they are a takeout only establishment. They offer walk-up orders only. There are no deliveries, no dine-in, no preorders, and there is no phone to call in an order! Personally, I love the concept that you have to physically walk up to the window to get a pizza!
While I was pondering my order, I overheard a gentleman asking if he could get a pizza delivered to his hotel. He added that he heard Shackamaxon had the best pizza in the city and needed to try. The friendly person in the window advised that wasn’t possible. But the gentleman committed to returning a little later that day to pick up a pizza!
Reviewing Pizza Shackamaxon’s New York Style Pizza
The round pizza from Pizza Shackamaxon in Fishtown is a classic. Thin crust, smooth and rich sauce, and thoroughly melted and caramelized cheese form the quintessential NY slice. This slice was overall pretty good with plenty of crisp. Having stopped by an a non-peak time, I had a sense that this slice pie may have been resting for a short while before reheating. Regardless, the slice was thoughtfully composed with proper proportions and quality ingredients.
The supreme crunch of the cornicione was my favorite part of the pizza. It was super crunchy and the dough had very nice flavor to it. The light sprinkling of herbs and generous shreds of romano cheese on top added some wonderful taste and dimension. Overall, I really enjoyed this slice. Next time I’ll order a full pie or stop by at a peak time as my foodie friends have advised after my visit! This definitely does have the makings of one of the better slices in the city.

The crust was thick with an impressive crumb structure. In addition, it boasted great flavor and superior crunch around the outside and bottom while being soft and chewy in the center. The sauce reminded me of jersey fresh tomatoes with some sweetness and punchy tang along with a hearty seedy sort of texture. To top it off, some Italian seasoning was lightly sprinkled to bring some additional herbal notes.
Tomato pie is served cold (room temperature) and this was no different. This crust was unlike most bakery philly tomato pies that feature pasty and sweet sauces along with a thinner, more uniform and spongy crust. This slice had some premium artisanal touches, local Jersey vibes, and clear Philadelphia roots. An excellent slice for sure!
