The Frog Pond Pub in Wilkes-Barre on Coal Street near the Wilkes-Barre Scranton Penguins practice facilities is a great bar and restaurant. They feature several types of pizza, many flavors of chicken wings, and a full menu with something for everyone. It’s also a clean bar with a relaxing atmosphere. The staff and ownership is super friendly, accommodating, and attentive. All of these things combined to make my recent visit with a friend to the Frog Pond with a memorable one!
While dining at the Frog Pond, we had wonderful conversations with the bartender and one of the owners even popped by and we learned a bit about the history of the place which has been around for quite some time. I learned that ownership recently changed hands in 2021, but their rock star pizza maker remains. With a tenure of more than 15 years, she’s still churning out the same great pizza recipes from decades ago. We also learned that The Frog Pond Pub is one of the few places in the area to offer Pabst Blue Ribbon on tap. So if you enjoy a draft PBR, this is the spot for you!
As we tried to figure out what we wanted to order, the bartender was very helpful in pointing out some highlighted menu items. Based on all of the recommendations from readers over the years I knew we would be ordering a round pie. Along with the round pizza I ordered some chicken wings with “Bull Frog” sauce. We also ordered a double bacon cheeseburger pizza and a Sicilian to try. It was way too much food for just 2 guys, but we figured the leftovers would go over well at home!
Sweet Sauce Pizza
First I tried the hand tossed round pizza which featured cheese on the bottom and a sweet sauce on top. It had some Grotto Pizza vibes from looking at it. The first bite was really pleasant with the sweet and savory sauce flavor being the ingredient that lead the way. The salty cheese offset the sweet sauce nicely. The crust was gloriously golden brown and cooked beautifully. The dough was tender and crisp on the bottom and a pleasure to eat. I can see why so many readers recommended Frog Pond’s round pizza to me over the past decade.
Sicilian Pizza
The Sicilian pizza featured a different sauce and presumably different cheese blend than the round pie. It was build on a dense and soft medium thickness crust that was chewy and tender. When I lifted the first cut of pizza up from the tray it yielded an epic cheese pull! The onions come standard on The Frog Pond Pub’s Sicilian pizza and they provide quite the flavor punch on this pizza.
Double Bacon Cheeseburger Pizza
Next up was the insane beast of a pizza known as the double bacon cheeseburger pizza. Hand tossed dough smothered with ketchup, mustard, ground beef, bacon and a pile of cheese created a pizza that had to weigh 3 or so pounds! One reader commented “You will never forget your first bite of this pizza.” and I can say for sure, that was decidedly true!
