Triple Pizza Night in Tomato Town: Revisiting Savo’s Pizza in Pittston, PA

I’m so grateful to my fans in Pittston—affectionately known as Tomato Town—so when I had the chance to visit, I decided to go all in and review not one, not two, but three pizzas in one night! After sampling the brand-new Uncle Joe’s Pizza and the nostalgic flavors of Shandra’s Pizza, I headed over ‘da bypass for a shot at a longtime local favorite: Savo’s Pizza in Pittston, PA.

A Long-Awaited Return to Savo’s

I’ve definitely been to Savo’s Pizza a few times over the years, but I don’t think I ever ordered their pizza until recently. I had reviewed their Old Forge Style nearly six years ago to the day and had received several reader requests to return and try the round pizza. So when the first lady and I spotted Savo’s while running errands, we pulled in and made it happen.

Walking in, I immediately noticed that the place had changed locations since my last visit—they moved from the strip mall to a new, cozier spot. I also learned they were under new ownership, so I knew I’d have some fresh comparisons to make.

Diner Meets Theater Vibes

The dining room was buzzing on this Friday night, and the décor caught me off guard in the best way. Imagine a 1950s-style diner meets a movie theater meets a classic Italian restaurant. There’s a lot going on, but somehow, it works. The place was busy with dine-in, takeout, and delivery orders, but the woman running the front of the house was a total rock star—answering phones, waiting tables, working the register. Despite the chaos, she delivered excellent table service.

Round Pizza and Wings: A Speedy Feast

We started with mild chicken wings that came out in just 7 minutes, and our pizza followed shortly after—piping hot, steamy, and looking fantastic. This round pizza had a shiny, greasy surface, lots of cheese, and a well-cooked crust. I picked up a slice and immediately noticed a lot of flop and a super soft base. It required the classic fold-in-half move to eat, and even then, it was a bit of a challenge to hold.

Flavor-wise, this pie diverged from the Old Forge style I remembered. The sauce had a pasty consistency, some noticeable zest, and was heavily seasoned. The cheese stole the show—salty, stringy, and unapologetically greasy. I’m no dabber, so I let the oil flow and just enjoyed the ride.

Overall, the pizza was solid and satisfying, though the taste and texture didn’t quite match the visual appeal. The wings were tasty, and the efficient service was a huge plus—especially with a fidgety one-year-old pizza prince in tow.

Bonus Round: The Return of Old Forge Style

But that wasn’t the end of my Savo’s experience. On another visit, I stopped in for a few slices to-go. The friendly counter girl informed me I had to order at least three slices—not a problem since my car was already a rolling leftover buffet!

This time, the pizza turned out to be Old Forge Style—a little surprise twist. It looked saucy and was baked just right. The crust was your standard pre-made shell, but it was properly cooked: fluffy in the center, crispy on the bottom. The sauce leaned sweet, with a slight onion flavor, but no visible chunks. The cheese seemed to be American or a similar blend.

This pizza was decent—nothing groundbreaking, but a solid option if you’re into sweeter, straightforward Old Forge-style pies. The ingredients didn’t totally harmonize for my tastebuds, but judging by the line of eager customers, plenty of folks love what Savo’s is serving.
