2 Local Men Make Fresh Take and Bake Old Forge Pizza Inside Gerrity’s Supermarket in Clarks Summit
A fresh take and bake Old Forge Pizza is the perfect quick family dinner or fresh party snack. This simple convenience is at the center of The Baker Boyz business model. Whenever you walk near the checkout registers by the adult beverage section of Gerrity’s Supermarket in Clarks Summit you’ll see their products. Prominently displayed inside two reach-in refrigerators, their fresh made take and bake trays of pizza are available with a wide variety of toppings.
History of Baker Boyz
The business was started by two FedEx employees – Pete Mendos and Rob Tomsak. Pete and Rob were looking for a business to start and were fascinated by an article they saw in the newspaper. The business was known as “Old Forge Pizza Express” which was located in Chinchilla, PA in “the notch” located next to the Wine and Spirits store. The duo quickly got involved with the Old Forge Pizza Express franchise and later moved the business into Gerrity’s in Clarks Summit in 2008. Subsequently, they changed the name to “The Baker Boyz Old Forge Pizza” and they remain in that sole location today.
Home Baked Pizza Just Like in the Pizzeria
The Baker Boyz coolers are stocked with many take and bake Old Forge pizza styles to choose from including red, white, buffalo, and spicy garlic parmesan. In addition, there are choices with and without onions to choose from. I tried the white, hot wing, and spicy garlic parm pizzas to bake and share with friends.
The directions are pretty simple:
- Preheat oven to 425f degrees.
- Remove plastic wrap and cardboard. Place on cookie sheet.
- Check pizza after 8 or 9 minutes or until cheese is melted and crust is golden brown.
- Place back on cardboard to cut and serve.
I followed the directions closely, and found that in about 11 minutes the white pizza was done baking to my desired color and doneness. The spicy garlic parm also took about 11 minutes, and hot wing pizza took an additional minute or 2 to bake. Overall, the process could not have been easier and more convenient. They even include the cardboard which doubles as a serving tray – so no extra dirty dishes to clean!
The Pizza Reviews
All 3 take and bake old forge pizzas cooked up beautifully and looked like a tray that came from a pizzeria in the Pizza Capital of the World (Old Forge, PA). I was impressed at how well the crust was not soggy from the sauce sitting directly on the dough. Further, the pizza shells cooked up to a glorious golden brown and was quite crispy on the bottom. I was also impressed at how nicely the cheese melted with great gooeyness and sporadic caramelization.
I was definitely impressed with how the pizzas cooked up, next came the taste test. First, the white pizza was generously covered in a blend of cheeses and sprinkled with a pleasant seasoning blend that worked very nicely. It was a light pizza that was easy to eat, simple, and delicious. Next, the red garlic parmesan ended up being my favorite of the trio because of its sweet red sauce with a hint of heat and the added richness of parmesan. With the medium thickness crust and generous amount of cheese in the mix, it was on the mild side and certainly not overwhelmingly spicy.
Finally, the hot wing pizza featured a generous amount of buffalo sauce coated grilled chicken, cheese, and what I think was a red pizza sauce underneath. It was very tasty with subtle heat and very good flavor. I enjoyed the texture of the chicken and the flavor punch of the buffalo sauce. These take and bake old forge pizzas are certainly pizzeria quality!
