Leonor’s Eatery Moscow is a cozy little eatery on Main Street. It offers a diverse menu of Italian, Mexican and American foods. Their extensive menu offers a “Taste of Mexico” section featuring tacos, enchiladas, and burritos as well as a “From Italy” page that includes seafood and pasta dishes. Leonor’s also has a sister restaurant in Mount Cobb – Isabella’s Eatery which offers some similar menu items as well as some distinct dishes.
I stopped by Leonor’s to try the pizza on the recommendation of my readers who seemed to have universally positive things to say about it. The square pizza with vodka sauce was the most recommended item, but I wanted to get a baseline with a plain cheese pizza. Let me tell you, this pizza was anything but plain!
Unique Pizza in a Class of its Own
I ordered my pizza on the phone and showed up about 10 minutes early. The pizza was just coming out of the oven and I felt the heat radiating from the heavy box. I grabbed a seat at one of the picnic tables out front of the eatery and flipped open the box. It’s appearance was as beautiful as it was unexpected. The edge crust was a deep golden brown. The cheese also featured some deep browning in some areas and some peaks of white and pale yellow peaking through.
There appeared to be at least 2 cheeses in play here. A saltier and more sharp cheese on top which I surmised was cheddar (could be totally wrong), and a gooey, stretchy white cheese I guessed was fresh mozzarella. The combination of the two cheeses was wonderful. For the cheese lovers out there, this was heavy on the cheese!
The sauce was super bold and flavorful and it had to be to compete with the standout flavors of the cheese and crust. Plenty of smooth and hearty sauce was applied in perfect proportions to the generous cheese. The crust was baked to absolute perfection with a crunchy edge and bottom and a softer interior. As a result this tray of pizza was a symphony of textures and tastes.
Why This Pizza is a Must Try
If you watch the video below, you can see that I got more excited about this pizza as the review went on. It was obvious to me that this to be in the “must try” category. I feel that way for a few reasons. First, it’s different. This pan pizza doesn’t fit comfortably into any category. Leonor’s square isn’t Old Forge, it’s not Pan Fried Sicilian, and it’s not a traditional American Sicilian pizza. It’s in a class by itself.
Another reason this is a must try is they cook it darker and deeper than most local pizza spots. It also has a flavor profile and cheese blend unlike anything I’ve tried before. If you enjoy these characteristics in a pizza, I strongly suggest you try it!
