If you’re searching for some of the best pizza in Plains, PA, look no further than Florio’s Pizza. This old-school takeout joint is a true hidden gem, serving up some of the finest Pan Fried Sicilian (PFS) pizza in the area. My recent visit to Florio’s was a memorable experience, from the warm hospitality to the unmistakable sizzle of the pizza frying in steel pans.

A Classic Takeout Spot with Authentic Charm

Florio’s is a small, no-frills pizzeria that provides a partial view into the kitchen, where you can catch a glimpse of the Bakers Pride ovens and seasoned steel pans—the same kind I use at home! One of my favorite things about visiting traditional pizzerias is soaking in the atmosphere, and at Florio’s, you can actually hear the pizza frying as it crisps up in the pan. That alone sets the stage for an authentic Pan Fried Sicilian experience.

A Warm Welcome from the Owner

One of the highlights of my visit was meeting Mike, the owner, who took the time to step out from the back and chat with me. We had an incredible conversation about pizza, farming, and local food spots. It’s always a pleasure to connect with true pizza lovers, and this was one of those genuine moments that I won’t forget.

The Pizza: A Perfectly Balanced Pan Fried Sicilian

Now, let’s talk about the star of the show—the Pan Fried Sicilian pizza.

  • Crust: Fried to a perfect medium brown, offering a crispy edge and bottom while maintaining a soft and tender center.
  • Sauce: A textured sauce that wasn’t overly chunky but provided great consistency and balanced flavor. This was one of the more sauce-heavy PFS pizzas I’ve had, but it worked perfectly!
  • Cheese: A mild-flavored cheese blend, possibly mozzarella and cheddar, though I can’t say for sure. The portion was generous without overwhelming the sauce.
  • Overall Balance: The ratio of crust, sauce, and cheese was spot on, making for a well-rounded and enjoyable bite.
