Great Pizza, Wings, and People at the Back Road Ale House
Enjoying the Fabulous Pan Fried Sicilian Pizza at the Back Road!
Back Road Ale House on Main Street in Swoyersville is a fantastic bar and restaurant that’s laid back, has a friendly staff and customer base, and great food and service. I’ve had many people recommend this NEPA hot spot for Pan Fried Sicilian Pizza and chicken wings to me, but finally had the chance to stop in recently. Upon entering any restaurant, I always try to get the vibe of the place. In this case, it was a warm and welcoming atmosphere filled with people having spirited discussions, smiling and feasting on huge portions of food. My friend and I took a seat at the bar and the busy bartender was already waiting for us as if we were regular patrons (which we aren’t – YET) to greet us and take our orders.

I ordered a full tray of Pan Fried Sicilian Pizza, (my) half with onions. I also couldn’t resist ordering some of the jumbo chicken wings I spotted on another patron’s plate. My friend ordered some fries which turned out to be the largest portion of fries I think I’ve seen at a place not named Five Guys.
The food was ready in no time and the pizza came out steaming hot, crispy and looking fantastic. I eagerly flipped up a corner slice to check out the bottom of the PFS pizza – it was golden brown, fried and baked to perfection, and not very greasy, thanks in part to the dimpled serving pan (pictured above) which I’m seeing in more pizzerias lately. The sauce was pleasant, nice body and smooth, slightly sweet, and provided a great foundation for the onions to create additional flavor and aroma. The cheese was ooey, gooey, and stretched like crazy!
Overall, this was one of the more delicious pizzas you’ll encounter. It’s certainly not “diet friendly food” but my goodness is it worth the calories! It had a lot of T.C. Riley’s roots, and I understood from some of the discussions we had that the Back Road and Riley’s are affiliated. Another giveaway that some menu items had “TC’s” and “Riley” in the names. It’s no coincidence that I enjoyed the place so much because TC Riley’s is also one of my favorite spots to dine at!
I will also say the wings were huge, cooked perfectly, and were neatly coated in a flavorful buffalo sauce. The service, the food, the people, and the experience made this a pizza review I won’t soon forget. Have you been to Back Road Ale House? Share you experience in the comments!
