Mutant Brewing Company, a new taproom in Scranton, has quickly gained a reputation for its colorful and crazy branding, uniquely named craft beers, and exceptional Detroit-style pizza. With beers like Mutant Serum, Stuntman Sour, and Boring Banana Bread, their eclectic offerings are complemented by an expansive bar, ample seating, and a full menu of intriguing appetizers, sandwiches, and pizzas.

A Pizza Fanatic’s Dream: Detroit-Style Pizza

While I’m not particularly a craft beer enthusiast, my passion for pizza, especially Detroit-style pizza, drew me to Mutant Brewing Company. The establishment, owned by the same person who ran Stage West during the pandemic, offers an upgraded version of the Detroit-style pizza I loved back in 2021. This new 8×10 rectangular pizza had me excited to indulge.

Cup N Char Pepperoni Pizza: A Flavorful Classic

First, I tried the Detroit Pizza with cup n char pepperoni. You can also order this with hot honey, but I opted for the traditional version to savor the pure flavors of the pizza. Despite its relatively small size, this pizza packs a punch. The crust is like a pillowy soft Sicilian dough, lightly crispy on the bottom and supremely crispy around the edges.

The hallmark of Detroit-style pizza is its edge, where a generous amount of cheese is pressed against the pan to caramelize and crisp up. I call this frico “the best bite in sports” for its crunchiness and flavor. The buttery, gooey cheese created an epic cheese pull, as you can see in the video below. The pepperoni cups were meaty, flavorful, and salty, contrasting beautifully with the naturally sweet, subtly textured sauce. This pizza is a home run and arguably the most authentic Detroit-style pizza in NEPA!

Vodka Sauce Pizza: Crispier and Creamier

The vodka sauce pizza featured the same exceptional crust, cooked a bit longer for added crispiness. The cheese blend seemed slightly different, lacking the cheese pull of the pepperoni pizza, but it was still delicious. The vodka sauce was perfect—not too thick or thin, with a subtle texture similar to the first pizza’s sauce. It provided a delightful balance without any large chunks, ideal for those who prefer a smoother sauce.
