Located in the heart of Scranton, Buona Pizza is a beloved local gem that has been delighting residents and visitors alike since 1966. The pizzeria located next to the Marketplace at Steamtown is known for its authentic New York style pizza and old school pizzeria vibes. Buona pizza (pronounce BUA-NA to the locals) is a popular spot on Lackawanna Avenue. When I worked on the square years ago, I would routinely walk in to grab a couple slices on lunch as many locals do. What sets Buona apart from many pizzerias in NEPA is that this is a prime spot for New Yorkers who have either moved here or are visiting from the big city. The familiar vibes, old school flair, and downright delicious NY style pies tend to satisfy even the staunchest New Yorker! Believe me, in hearing from that crowd for more than a decade, they are serious about their views on pizza!

Reviewing Buona NY Style Pizza

Buona’s traditional thin crust New York style pizza is quite tasty, and has a lot of flavor resonating from the moderately seasoned sauce and quality tomatoes. I detected a hint of Italian seasonings but not so much that I couldn’t taste the tomatoes. The sauce really is the lead flavor in this pie. The cheese is also very tasty, a tiny bit greasy (in a good way), gooey and stringy, and had just the right amount of saltiness to it. The crust was my favorite part, as it was crispy, cooked to perfection, and had a nice flavor and consistency.

Overall, this pizza is as rock solid as they come. It’s also an authentic pizza like you’d find in a quality shop in the big city. Buona Pizza is always was fast, flavorful, and consistent. I always recommend this place for any New Yorker or pizza snob seeking a great NY slice right here in NEPA.
