Original Pizza on Drinker in Scranton is a neat little place that serves a few styles of pizza with their signature sweet sauce. I first learned about the guy behind the pizza when he invited me to his garage to review his “old forge” style pizza with the sweet sauce! Even though I always say I’m not a sweet sauce guy, I was impressed with his pizza. When a pizza sauce is sweet, balanced, complex, and doesn’t taste like a bunch of sugar was dumped into it I can enjoy it. I remember thinking I could drink a gallon of that slow simmered sauce the first time I tried it!

From Drinker Street, to a Garage Review, to a Pizzeria in Scranton

Watch as I try Original Pizza on Drinker Pizza in Brian’s Garage Before it became a pizzeria open to the public!

Fast forward a few years, and Brian the owner has opened Original Pizza on Drinker in Scranton on Pittston Avenue between CVS and Wendy’s. The pizzeria is a small shop with just a couple tables. Besides the pizza, OPD is known for their wing bites. I’ve been told by many that the sauce on those wings is outstanding. I’ll put that on my to-do list for the next visit. For now, I was excited to try the sweet sauce on the Old Forge type pizza again. However, when I heard he was making Detroit Style Pizzas I was even more pumped.

Reviewing Original Pizza on Drinker’s Detroit Pizza with the Pizza Prince (my son)!

Reviewing the Detroit Pizza

I stopped by with the pizza prince to try Brian’s Detroit Pizza with that Original Pizza on Drinker sweetness in the sauce! I understand that the sauce on the DSP is a slightly different than the sauce on the traditional square tray. It seems to have a little more texture and body to it, but maintains that same Drinker sweet sauce core. This sauce is definitely sweet, but it’s complex, smooth in taste with plenty of depth. I often say I’m not a sweet sauce guy, especially when it’s sugar sweet like candy. This gives you those candy vibes and a whole lot more without that sugar hangover.

The crust on the Detroit pizza is soft, airy, and pillowy. Mine was lightly cooked, but with a nice brown crisp on the bottom. There was plenty of cheese on top which really gave the pizza some weight and plenty of flavor. It was definitely a blend of cheeses, but to be honest I was more focused on the sauce and don’t have a great guess at what the blend was – perhaps a bit of brick and mozzarella and a hint of something else. It was buttery, stringy with a nice cheese pull and supremely delicious.

Who Will Love This?

If you’re a fan of cheesy bread, you’re by default a fan of Detroit style pizza (even if you don’t know it)! The difference is that caramelized cheese edge from cheese getting pressed deliberately against the side of the pan. This is the most delicious bite of pizza in all of sports! If you haven’t already, you have to try some Detroit pizza. If you like sweeter sauces, Original Pizza on Drinker in Scranton is the place to try!
