Larry’s Pizza and Pub Nanticoke is a great takeout joint on one side and an Irish-themed sports bar on the Church Street. The long-time eatery is home to some of the friendliest staff and patrons you will find! It’s a great place to catch a game on TV, have great conversation, enjoy a few cold ones, and some great pizza! Dubbed one of the “Core Four” pizzerias in Nanticoke, Larry’s is one of the oldest pizza spots in town!
I teamed up with Bob Kalinowski of The Nanticoke Newsroom to go on a “Pizza Tour” of Nanticoke. The journey included four of Nanticoke’s oldest pizza making establishments. We visited Ruby’s Inn, Nardozzo’s Pizzeria, Joe’s Pizza, and Larry’s Pizza and Pub. It was a great day filled with delicious pizza and great conversation. The owners, staffs, and customers were all wonderful people. It was so interesting to hear how these businesses all support one another. It was also refreshing to learn about how committed the folks of Nanticoke are to history and telling stories about their roots. Really cool town, amazing people, and great pizza with unique characteristics everywhere!
Video Review and First Impressions of Larry’s Pizza
Larry’s offers a pretty diverse menu of pizza, dinners, apps, subs, salads, wraps and more. The pizza lineup includes round and Sicilian pizza. You can order the round pizza in regular thickness, thick, or x-thick to tailor to your liking. I decided to go with a round bar pie because I had already eaten at 4 other Nanticoke pizza spots in the same day. I will note that the pizza at Larry’s that gets recommended to me by readers the most is the chicken wing pizza. In speaking to the owner, he confirmed that is one of their top sellers. I’ll definitely check that out next time!
Reviewing the Bar Pie
The bar pie seemed to be ready in no time at all, steaming hot and ready to be feasted on. For those not familiar with a bar pie or tavern pie, the loose definition is a small, thin pizza served to patrons at a bar as light fare that is sharable with others. I believe they are designed to provide a light meal without filling you up and leaving room for more beverages. This was a 12″ pizza that definitely fit the definition.
As you can see in the pic below, the cheese was the star of this pizza! I picked up a slice and lifted it straight up causing an epic cheese pull that stretched for at least 3 feet! The cheese was stringy, slightly salty, slightly sharp, a little buttery, and really delicious. The sauce was also quite good featuring an overall smoothness with just a hint of texture to make it interesting. It was a well balanced and moderately sweet and seasoned sauce that contrasted the cheese nicely.
The crust was crisp around the edges, slightly dense, and flavorful. It provided a sturdy base and was beautifully browned on the bottom. The pizza was really executed perfectly. I enjoyed the heck out of it and I know for sure that a wide audience would also enjoy this pizza. I call it a “party pleaser” type that offers something for everyone!
