Scicchitano’s Pizzeria Berwick is an old school pizzeria that is famous for their “Doagie” sandwich. The Doagie is something of a round hoagie sandwich made from pizza dough. It comes with everything you’d expect on a hoagie, except that it’s round and sliced into four quarters. The sandwich can be compared in many ways to a muffaletta minus the olive salad.
Scicchitano’s oozes historical charm and quirkiness. The front of the pizzeria looks like it was either a gas station or a bank at one time. Inside the place is a throwback open space with tables to dine at, a case and freezer full of pies and baked goods, a deli counter displaying pizzas by the slice, and what looks to be an enormous kitchen area in the back. I didn’t take a tour, but from my vantage point in the dining room, it looked like there was some serious square footage to work with back there!
The Doagie bread was soft and spongy with a tight crumb and some chewiness to it. I ordered the Italian which featured cappicola, salami, pepperoni, provolone cheese, lettuce tomato, onion, and banana peppers (I added).
