John’s of Arthur Avenue Milford is known for their creative pizzas and Italian cuisine. A simple scroll of their facebook page will show you some of the crazy pizza ideas they come up with regularly. The pizzeria is located in “The Old Lumberyard Shops” in the quaint and historic town of Milford. It’s a charming complex complete with outdoor seating on a large deck/patio.

Naturally, I wanted to try a ton of their creative menu items, but I was on a time crunch and decided to pick from the pretty extensive selection of slice pies. It seems like all of their pizzas are round – even the Sicilian and Detroit style pizzas, which was unique.

Putting in My Order

The first thing that caught my eye was the Motown Special, followed by the Graffiti Pizza. I wanted to get a plain cheese to get a baseline, but the last couple slices were just sold. I opted for a NY slice with cup n char pepperoni to get a baseline, because you can never go wrong with cupping pepperoni! I also ordered a couple salads and some rice balls to go, but we’ll keep our focus on the pizza.

The staff was super friendly and attentive during my brief stay. The service was very fast, which is a good thing. However, the slices were a little too fast. They came out warm, but I always prefer a thorough reheat to crisp up those bottoms and bring out the flavors. Regardless, I could tell I was dealing with some innovative cuts here crafted with love.

Reviewing John’s of Arthur Ave Creative Pizza Slices

My favorite slice of the trio was definitely the simple New York style slice with cup n char. It featured a thin, tender crust. It was soft and easy to eat with a rich, flavorful cheese, and a smooth sauce that was lightly seasoned. I thought the slice was perfectly balanced and the proportions were fantastic. The pepperoni was delicious and crispy. A little more crisp on the crust would have taken this pizza to another level, but really good as is!

The grafitti slice featured the same New York style crust, but also mixed in some red sauce, vodka sauce, and ricotta. It was a colorful and really flavorful slice. I especially enjoyed the vodka sauce which brought in a richness and even some sweetness that I detected. The shreds of fresh basil on top added an additional pop of color. This slice was definitely an adventure in every bite. Very cool.

The pizza features a round Detroit pizza crust, aged mozzarella, asiago, cup n char pepperoni, pecorino, ricotta, basil, and hot chili honey. A total beast of a pizza that was a marvel to behold. The crust was flavorful, lightly crisp, and a beast to eat. The pepperoni was crispy and the hot honey flavor really popped. The large ricotta dollops were beautiful to look at and tasty, but I had to remove some as it was just too generously applied for my taste. They certainly don’t cheat you on the toppings!
