Big Al’s Pizza in Berwick is a small, clean, and simple pizzeria. They feature friendly services and a small menu with simply pizza, stromboli, and calzones. You can dine in at a couple of the small tables, but largely it appears to be a takeout joint. I stopped in after a good number of locals told me that the pizza was worthy of a try!
I stopped by to try a pizza and a stromboli. The pizza in the slice case looked really good so I decided to go with a plain cheese New York style pizza like that one. I also let my lunch wingman pick out the stromboli and he went with the chicken bacon ranch boli. Both were ready in seemingly no time flat. The pizza came out first absolutely smoldering hot.
Reviewing the Round Pizza at Big Al’s
The crust on this pizza was the thing that stood out most to me. It was flaky, almost consistent with how a butter crust bakes and flakes out. The edge had some beautiful microblisters all the way around, and the pizza was cooked to a beautiful golden brown. The sauce had a robust tang to it with low acidity and no sweetness. It was seasoned moderately and was smooth and rich in texture. The cheese seemed to be a mozzarella, although I am never certain on guessing cheeses!
All in all this was a solid pizza that I’m glad I tried. It’s the type of pizza that if I lived a couple blocks away, I’d probably stop by fairly regularly. It’s a pizza that most people will likely enjoy and fits comfortably in my “party pleaser” category and gets the job done.
Beast of A Boli
The chicken bacon ranch stromboli was an absolute beast boli. It was packed with shredded chicken, a ton of bacon bits, cheese, and plenty of ranch dressing. They didn’t short you on the toppings inside – that’s for sure! It was an indulgent and delicious combination that would likely feed a hungry family of four. I thought the flaky crust worked well on this boli and made it a little different than the rest of the strombolis I’ve tried over the years.
Overall, Big Al’s Pizza in Berwick is a nice little mom and pop pizza shop that keep it simple and does a nice job serving up the fresh food from their simple, yet effective menu.
