First Impressions: Classic Café Vibes with a Cozy Atmosphere

The Fort Café was easy to spot on Wyoming Avenue, right in the heart of Forty Fort, an area known for its collection of beloved pizzerias. Despite a slight challenge in finding a parking spot, stepping inside felt like visiting an old friend. The café has a cozy, familiar layout: a full bar up front, a few booths for intimate seating, and a larger dining area in the back. Think Colarusso’s in Avoca, but with a more compact, welcoming feel. Clean and inviting, the space set the perfect stage for a memorable meal.

Our Order: A Large, Delicious Square Pizza

Since we’d just come from another pizza spot, Newtown Café, we skipped The Fort Café’s tempting appetizers (which looked delicious and very affordable) and went straight for a large pizza. Although I was tempted by their famous “Suitcase” pizza—a huge takeout-only specialty—I knew we wouldn’t have room. At just $11, our large pizza was a substantial square pie, with rounded corners that gave it a unique look. It wasn’t a traditional Old Forge or Sicilian pizza; instead, it had a squared New York style that was both approachable and satisfying.

The Crust: Thin, Tender, and Flavorful

The crust quickly became my favorite part of the pizza. Thin yet slightly chewy, it had a pleasant texture and a rich, savory flavor that held up well under the toppings. Unlike some thicker crusts, this one didn’t overwhelm the other ingredients, making for a well-balanced bite every time.

The Sauce: A Crowd-Pleaser with Balanced Flavor

The Fort Café’s sauce was familiar yet tasty, striking a middle ground that NEPA locals will love. Slightly sweet, with a smooth texture and mild seasoning, the sauce paired well with the crust and complemented the toppings nicely. It’s a classic take that satisfies without overpowering.

The Cheese: A Tasty Cheddar Twist

To our pleasant surprise, the cheese appeared to be a blend that included cheddar, providing a mild, creamy contrast to the sauce. This unexpected twist added a hint of sharpness that enhanced the overall flavor, creating a delicious harmony on each slice.

Final Thoughts: A Pizza Spot Worth the Drive

The Fort Café in Forty Fort is a place I wish was closer to my neighborhood. The food is excellent, the atmosphere is warm and inviting, and it’s a family-owned spot with friendly service that makes you feel right at home. Even though it’s nearly an hour away, the trip was well worth it. So, if you’re in the area and searching for “pizza near me,” do yourself a favor and visit The Fort Café.
