Leo’s Pizzeria Williamsport (now Gamble Farm Inn Pizza) had caught my eye for the last couple years on social media. The appearance of the pizzas had elements of pizzas like Angelo’s Pizzeria, John’s of Bleecker Street, and Pizza Jawn. I had also followed many of the generous pizza giveaways that Leo’s had done in the community. Feeding kids in schools, elderly folks in retirement homes, and people in need of a meal were some of the selfless way’s the pizzeria gave back.
After learning that Leo’s was on the verge of closing their doors for good, I made the trek out to try the pizza before I missed my opportunity possibly forever. The trip turned out to be well worth 4 hours of round trip travel. It was a bittersweet day. I enjoyed getting to meet Mark the owner in person. He has a true passion for pizza and works at his craft to improve every day. I stuck around for a while talking shop and learning more about his inspirations and what might be next for the shuttered pizzeria. Before long, Mark had finished baking my pizza. Little did I know that would be the last pizza sold at Leo’s.
Pizza Worth the Drive!
I took my pizza outside to a table on the sidewalk to taste and review it. The appearance was as beautiful as it looked on social media. It featured a deep golden brown and slightly charred crust. There was a vibrant, deep red sauce on top of the cheese along with leaves of fresh basil. The crust was thin, crispy around the edges, had minimal flop, and tender in the center. The cheese had a pleasant and distinct buttery flavor and gooeyness to it. The sauce was smooth in texture and mild in flavor. Overall, it was a delicious pizza that I would drive 2 hours for again. Superior craftsmanship, quality ingredients, and something different than you see in most parts of Pennsylvania!
Leo’s Bittersweet End Creates Gamble Farm Inn Pizza Beginning
As I said my goodbyes and headed home, there was this sense of finality for this location. However, given the quality of the pizza and drive of the owner I also felt that this wouldn’t be the last we’d see these pies. Fast forward a couple weeks and I saw on facebook that Mark had announced his pizza would be available at a new venue – Gamble Farm Inn in Jersey Shore PA. Mark would be taking over Gamble Farm Pizza with his recipes!
It’s a classic case of when one door closes another door opens. It’s good to know that such awesome pizza is once again available in Jersey Shore Pennsylvania. Wishing them the best of luck and much success in the new location!
