The Mullet Review Halloween Costume: I Built the Fake Spirit Halloween Costume for Real

The Costume That Never Existed

Last week a post went viral showing a “Mullet Review” costume hanging in a Spirit Halloween bag — wig, shades, gold teeth, the whole package. It looked convincing enough that people started asking which store had it in stock.

It was AI-generated. That costume does not exist. Photoshopped and AI-generated Spirit Halloween packages have been a running internet joke since 2019, and the company has repeatedly had to tell people that the costumes in those images are not products it sells (Know Your Meme, The Sacramento Bee).

So I did the obvious thing. I went shopping on Amazon and built it for real.

If you do not know the man himself: Mullet Review is Brandon Elliott, the Cincinnati-area food reviewer with the blonde mullet who reviews hole-in-the-wall restaurants and buffets and has become one of the most recognizable food creators online (Cincinnati Magazine, The Cincinnati Enquirer). One Piece You Should Not Buy: The Cutoff Jeans

Skip Amazon for this one and hit a thrift store instead.

Grab an old pair of jeans for a few dollars, cut them off just below the knee, and fray the edges so they look worn in rather than freshly hemmed. A few passes with sandpaper, a wire brush, or even a cheese grater along the cut line pulls the threads loose and gets you that lived-in look. Wash and dry them once after cutting and the fray does most of the work for you.

Thrifted denim beats new denim here every time. Nobody’s cutoffs are supposed to look brand new, and you are out five bucks instead of fifty.

Assembly Tips

  • Mold the grillz early. Do it a day ahead, not in the car on the way to the party.
  • Sleeves before shirt. Roll the tattoo sleeves on first, then put the Hawaiian shirt over them.
  • Wig placement matters. Get the front hairline sitting naturally; the back does its own thing.
  • Commit to the bit. Rate everything you are handed all night. Somebody will hand you a slice.

The Real Version
