Luca Pizza West Pittston Celebrates 1 Year With Incredible New York Style Pizza and Sweet Sauce Slices

My son — the Pizza Prince — and I recently stopped by Luca Pizza in West Pittston as the shop approaches its one-year anniversary, and it didn’t take long to understand why people have been talking about this place.

Owner Angelo may already be familiar to longtime NEPA pizza fans. He previously ran Angelo’s Pizza in the Viewmont Mall, which he sold a couple years ago before opening this new location in West Pittston. Angelo has built a reputation for New York style pizza, grandma pizza, and creative specialty slices, and the slice case at Luca Pizza shows it the moment you walk in.

On our visit, the display was packed with options — and two slices immediately caught our attention.

New York Style Pizza in West Pittston That Checks Every Box

Right out of the oven sat a fresh New York style cheese pizza, and it looked absolutely phenomenal.

This is the type of slice you instantly recognize as legit New York style pizza:

  • Thin, foldable crust
  • Crisp bottom
  • Balanced sauce and cheese
  • Beautiful color across the pie

The sauce was vibrant and savory, with noticeable tomato freshness and a subtle Italian herb flavor that really brought everything together.

The mozzarella stood out too. It had just enough saltiness and a slight sharp edge that made every bite super satisfying. I have a pretty good idea I know what mozzarella Angelo is using, and based on that flavor profile, it’s one of my personal favorites.

When you combine that crust, sauce, and cheese, it creates a slice that easily belongs among the most impressive New York style pizzas in Northeast Pennsylvania. There simply aren’t many slices around that deliver this level of balance.

Luca Pizza’s Famous Sweet Sauce Pizza

Another slice everyone has been talking about is Luca Pizza’s sweet sauce pizza, and there’s a bit of history behind it.

When Angelo was running Angelo’s Pizza in the Viewmont Mall, customers from Luzerne County would regularly ask if he was the same Angelo from Wilkes-Barre known for sweet sauce pizza. At the time he wasn’t making it, but around the start of the pandemic he decided to introduce it — and it quickly gained a following.

The version at Luca Pizza West Pittston is fantastic.

The sauce is clearly sweet, but it’s naturally sweet, not sugary. I even noticed some of the tomato product in the kitchen that helps create that sweetness naturally.

The visual is just as impressive as the flavor.

The sauce is deep vibrant red and swirled on top of the cheese, creating that classic sweet sauce look that almost hypnotizes you before the first bite.

Paired with that foldable New York style crust, it’s a slice that really stands out.

I’ll be honest — I’m usually not a huge sweet sauce guy. But this one?
This one is really good.

Grandma Pizza With Crisp Texture and Bold Flavor

Next up was the grandma slice, and this one had its own personality.

The crust lands somewhere between a traditional grandma and a thinner Sicilian — medium thickness, light, and crisp.

The pizza features:

  • Vibrant marinara sauce
  • Basil pesto
  • Plenty of cheese

The crust had a beautiful crisp with a satisfying ASMR crunch, and every bite delivered a mix of flavors from the marinara, pesto, and cheese.

It’s one of those slices where every bite feels slightly different — a real flavor journey across the pizza.

Specialty Slices That Load Up the Flavor

Luca Pizza’s slice case doesn’t stop at traditional styles.

One of the standout specialty slices we tried was the Chicken Chipotle slice, which felt like a mash-up of chicken bacon ranch and southwest flavors.

The slice was loaded with toppings and had a light smoky flavor without being overly spicy.

There was so much on it that it almost felt like getting a hoagie on top of a slice of pizza — but it worked incredibly well.

And once again, it all sat on that crispy, foldable New York style crust.

A Buffalo Chicken Pinwheel Even Kids Will Love

To wrap things up, we grabbed a buffalo chicken pinwheel.

First thing I always check with a pinwheel is the dough — and this one was perfectly baked all the way through, which is the hallmark of a well-prepared pinwheel.

But the star here was the buffalo sauce.

It had a thicker viscosity and great flavor, but instead of being super spicy, it leaned a little sweeter with a mild kick.

That made it Pizza Prince approved — he loved it because it didn’t burn his mouth, while still delivering that buffalo flavor.
