Teberio’s Pizza and Pub in Wilkes-Barre: A Pan Fried Sicilian Hidden Gem That Deserves a Lot More Hype

There’s a short list of pizzerias that come up every time someone asks where to get the best Pan Fried Sicilian Pizza in NEPA — and the same handful of names usually dominate the conversation.

Teberio’s Pizza and Pub in Wilkes-Barre quietly belongs in that conversation too. It just doesn’t get talked about the same way.

After two separate visits — one for the classic half-tray red Sicilian, and a return trip for the small round pan fried Sicilian with sweet sauce — I’m convinced this is one of the most underrated PFS spots in the area.

As always, I walked in, ordered at the counter, paid the bill, and reviewed the pizza like every other customer. No heads-up. No comps. Same as I’ve done since 2012.

How Teberio’s Got On My Radar

I’m so grateful for my readers who keep me up to date on what’s hot on the NEPA pizza scene.

Over the year leading up to my first visit, I had quite a few people tweet, email, and message me telling me Teberio’s Pizza in Wilkes-Barre was the place to be. Several of those recommendations came from my most reliable social media sources — the folks who keep me in the know — so I knew it had to be legit.

I quickly followed Teberio’s on Facebook and saw exactly what they were talking about: a serious-looking pan fried Sicilian pizza with a beautiful crispy bottom and a generous coat of cheese.

That image stuck with me. I just needed an excuse to get to Wilkes-Barre.

Two Locations, Two Different Vibes

Teberio’s Pizza and Pub in Wilkes-Barre has that classic NEPA neighborhood pub energy. Friendly bartenders, regulars at the rail, and the kind of background buzz that tells you people actually hang out here. The dining room is its own thing — more sit-down and family-friendly — but it doesn’t feel disconnected from the rest of the place.

It’s the kind of spot where you can grab a beer, eat a tray of pizza, and stay way longer than you planned.

Visit #1 — The Classic Pan Fried Sicilian with Onion (Red)

I don’t get to Wilkes-Barre often, so when I had some business in the area I made it a point to swing by for a few slices. I was doing a back-to-back review with Sprinkles and Shakes that day, so I only picked up a half-tray (7-cut) red Sicilian.

It was hot and ready when I pulled in. When I opened the box in the car, the pizza somehow looked even better in person than it did on Facebook — and the smell of those onions on top was downright intoxicating. I could not wait to dig in.

The first bite told me everything I needed to know.

The bottom crust hit that signature PFS crackle — crispy, golden, structurally sound. There was a moderate level of grease, but nothing overwhelming, and that’s exactly how this style is designed. Inside, the dough was soft and chewy, the kind of interior crumb that only comes from a properly handled, well-rested dough.

But the real magic was the balance on top:

  • fairly neutral, slightly sweet, lightly chunky sauce that lets the other ingredients shine
  • Sweet onions that melted right into the sauce as the pizza baked, almost becoming part of the sauce itself
  • white cheddar–style blend with a clean, moderate sharpness and just enough saltiness to tie everything together

That cheddar choice is a big part of what makes this tray feel old-school NEPA in the best way. It’s not a flashy specialty cheese blend. It’s a confident, traditional choice — and on a properly fried Sicilian, it absolutely sings.

This is throwback PFS. The kind of pizza that reminds you why this style became a regional staple in the first place.

It’s not an everyday pizza for me — it’s a bit heavy for that — but it’s darn good, and I’d recommend it to the NEPA Nation without hesitation.

Pizzaiolo’s Notes 🍕

A few things I noticed putting on my pizza maker hat:

  • Bottom crust had clear, even color across the entire tray — that’s the mark of a fryer/pan being managed properly, not just “set it and forget it.”
  • Dough hydration and proof were on point. The interior had real airiness without being soggy under the cheese.
  • Cheese-to-sauce-to-onion ratio was dialed. The onion didn’t release enough water to wreck the bake, which is a sneaky-hard thing to nail on a pan pizza.
  • The pizza is also a bit thinner than most NEPA PFS trays — and the consistency from cut to cut is excellent.

This isn’t just a good pizza. It’s a technically well-executed one.

Visit #2 — The Small Round Pan Fried Sicilian with Sweet Sauce

The first visit had me hooked, so I made sure to get back for visit number two — this time dining in and going a different direction with the small round pan fried Sicilian topped with their sweet sauce.

Same crust personality. Same crispy bottom, same chewy interior. Just scaled down into a personal-sized pie with the same DNA as the full tray.

The sweet sauce version is its own experience. Sweet sauce has exploded across NEPA over the past few years, and Teberio’s take on it is legit — naturally sweet, not sugary, with enough character behind it that it doesn’t feel one-note.

I’ll be honest with you — I’m a traditional sauce guy. Given the choice, I’d take that original red tray every single time. But that doesn’t mean the sweet version isn’t delicious, because it absolutely is. If sweet sauce is your thing, you’re going to love this one.

That’s why I’m so glad locals kept telling me about it.

The Wings Are Not a Side Note

I’d be doing you a disservice if I didn’t mention the wings.

Teberio’s wings are legitimately excellent — not “good for a pizza place,” just good, full stop.

This is also why I’m already planning visit number three: I want to try their Chicken Wing Pizza. If they’re putting wings of this quality on top of that crust I already love, that pie has to be a winner.

Why Teberio’s Doesn’t Get the Hype It Deserves

Here’s the thing about Pan Fried Sicilian in NEPA — a few legendary names dominate the conversation, and once a place is “the spot,” it’s hard for anyone else to break through.

Teberio’s is one of the casualties of that dynamic. The pizza is genuinely on par with names that get a lot more attention, but it’s been quietly serving great trays without the same megaphone.

Consider this review part of fixing that.

What I’d Order Next Time

  • 🍕 Original Pan Fried Sicilian with onion (again — non-negotiable)
  • 🍗 Chicken Wing Pizza
  • 🍺 Whatever cold draft is in front of me at the bar

Final Thoughts on Teberio’s Pizza and Pub

If you’ve been sleeping on Teberio’s, this is your sign.

My Takeaways:

  • 🍕 The traditional Pan Fried Sicilian with onion is a NEPA classic — and one of the best versions in the area
  • 🧀 The white cheddar–style cheese gives it true throwback character that some modern PFS spots have moved away from
  • 🍅 The sweet sauce round is excellent if that’s your style — even a traditionalist like me had to give it credit
  • 🍗 The wings are no afterthought — they may be the best surprise on the menu
  • 🏆 Teberio’s belongs in the conversation when people talk about the best PFS in NEPA

Thanks again to all of you who sent in this recommendation over the years. Keep them coming.
