Scranton Hoagie Shop Deserves More Attention Than it Receives For its Great Food and Fantastic People

I first learned about Dee Jay’s Hoagie Shop Scranton when I was walking down main avenue with my wife and we smelled the aroma of chicken wings in the air. Some places you can just tell by the smell outside that they know how to cook a great chicken wing! I took a mental note that we wanted to try it out one day. Beyond that intoxicating fried chicken scent I didn’t know much about Dee Jay’s until I set out to try the pizza.

Before placing an order, I polled my readers and found out their popular recommendations. They were the pizza, Special Italian hoagie (extra meat and cheese), chicken wings, hot wing hoagie, and Texas wiener. I ordered a pizza, Italian hoagie, mild wings, and a Texas wiener to gain a nice sampling of the menu. I have to say, the gentleman on the phone was super friendly and helpful as I had a few questions about my order. He was so gracious and even thanked me for calling in my order ahead of time. Perhaps this is a trivial detail for some, but to me this is customer service at its finest.

Hot and Fresh Food Expertly Prepared

When I arrived at the stipulated time, my order had just come out of the oven. It was perfect timing to try the pizza which was steaming hot. I flipped open the box to find a really nicely cooked Old Forge style pizza with a thinner crust. Next I grabbed a slice and checked the bottom to find a deeply golden brown and crispy undercarriage. A vibrant red sauce peaked through areas of what I think was American cheese or similar. The sauce was well balanced with a little sweetness and a little tang. I detected some onion flavor, but there was no hint of actual chunks of onions in the sauce.

This pizza was really thoughtfully prepared and was really tasty. I will 100% be back for more. I also really loved the mild chicken wings which were cooked crispy as I like them and were coated with a classic buffalo sauce with no frills, but perfect flavor. The Texas weiner was also on point and super delicious. Finally the Italian hoagie really hit the spot later on when I chowed down on it!
